For the wall we are building you will need 4 since the number isn t even with a 5 foot long.
It will often depend on any snow or roof load.
Now cut two more also 7 9.
Take the length of the walls and divide by sixteen to find the number you will need.

Placing the x in the full stud locations will always tell you that there is continuous wood from the top to bottom in that space as you are placing your 2 x 4s between the plates for nailing.

Studs wall framing members are placed on either 16 or 24 centers.
This means from the exact center of one stud to the exact center of the adjacent stud is 16 or 24 inches.
You will need a stud for every 16 inches of wall you are building.
